STEM ambassadors

STEM Ambassadors

The STEM Ambassadors initiative is a national programme of volunteers with a background in science, technology, engineering and mathematics who can offer their time, enthusiasm and expertise to help inspire young people. There are currently 410 Ambassadors in the Highlands and Islands with a target of 501 by the end of March 2011.

Who are STEM Ambassadors?

STEM Ambassadors come from a wide variety of STEM backgrounds and careers at all levels from apprentices to chief executives. Their jobs range from marine biologists to mathematicians studying climate change, from aeronautical engineering apprentices to medical physicists and industrial chemists to electrical engineers and lab technicians.

What do STEM Ambassadors do?

Ambassadors are provided with a range of opportunities which fit their own skills and availability. They give careers talks; they help with activities such as lunchtime STEM clubs and classroom projects; they lead workshops at science festivals and events and they give careers talks.

Why become a STEM Ambassador?

•    Make a difference in the local community and enhance the reputation of your business
•    Develop your own planning and presentation skills whilst also building your confidence
•    Develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of young people – your future workforce
•    Gain a sense of achievement

Will I receive training?

Before working with young people you will be required to attend a half day induction session at a venue local to you.  This is designed to help to prepare you for working in the classroom. You will then be fully supported in your activities by our STEM Ambassador Coordinator.

“The thing I most enjoy is seeing the children learn new things. It’s a great feeling knowing that you’ve helped somebody understand something and that you could have potentially changed their views on science and technology.” (Farr Macdonald, electrical draughtsperson, Nuvia Limited, Thurso)
