The International Centre for Island Technology

For most enterprises, location is more often than not the crucial factor in its success. Perhaps then, the acclaim directed at The International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT) is in part due to its base in one of the most renewable energy-rich areas of the Highlands and Islands.

Sited in Stromness in Orkney, ICIT has a wealth of renewable energy projects on its doorstep and the world-leading European Marine Energy Centre for a neighbour.

Arguably the UK’s top teaching centre for renewable energy studies, ICIT was established in 1989 to conduct advanced research, postgraduate training and consultancy in marine resource management and related issues. It provides a unique teaching and research facility, and today forms an integral part of Heriot-Watt University's prestigious Institute of Petroleum Engineering.

Renewable energy, is one of ICIT’s special interests; its flagship training course being the MSc in Renewable Energy.  This is a conversion course for graduates wishing to complement existing subject specialisms in engineering, environmental sciences, economics, finance, construction or related disciplines.

The MSc is designed to help plug the emerging skills gap in the renewables sector where both private and public sector employers require graduates with core skills and knowledge of renewable energy.
