Big Green Challenge

The Big Green Challenge
The Big Green Challenge is a secondary schools debating competition run by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), which has helped pupils in 1st to 3rd year across the region gain a better understanding of renewable energy. Over 120 pupils took part in the competition's first year in 2008-09, and the grand final took place at the Scottish Parliament on 30th January 2009. Sandwick Junior High from Shetland won first prize - a trip to Iceland to witness renewable energy projects first-hand, as well as visiting the Blue Lagoon and the geothermal area of Geysir. Portree High School came second, winning a trip to the Eden Project in Cornwall, the vast domes of which house the world’s largest greenhouse.
Participating schools had access to renewables experts and top tips for debating to hone their skills as well as sessions with mentors from their local business communities on presentation. The Big Green Challenge participants were expected to comprehensively research motions both for and against renewable energy.

The next Big Green Challenge for 2013 has just been launched. The competition is open to all S1 to S3 pupils across the Highlands and Islands. To register an interest, please email your name, school and address and we will ensure you receive the information pack in September.
HIE recognises that renewable energy is a sector with high growth potential which will benefit the local economy and communities across the region. Increasing Scotland’s renewable energy generation is also a key Scottish Government pledge, with the aim of half of Scotland’s electricity coming from renewable sources by 2020.
Anna Allan, senior development manager in HIE’s Energy team says, “The Highlands and Islands not only has some of the best renewable energy resources in Europe, but also some of the most diverse, in what is a relatively small geographic area. It’s vital that we help support understanding of both sides of the renewables debate and that we encourage our young people to be well informed and engaged citizens.
“There is a desire to build a diverse renewable energy sector in the Highlands and Islands, and it’s the young people in our schools today who will drive this industry forward. The Big Green Challenge is about engaging with young people and ensuring they can see both sides of the renewables debate.”
