The Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (DBERR) is the leading UK Government department responsible for energy policy.
Consequently, the DBERR’s roles and responsibilities on energy are wide ranging; spanning oil, gas, nuclear and renewables.
The main arms of the DBERR covering renewables are the Sustainable Energy Policy Network and the Renewables Advisory Board. The former co-ordinates policy in relation to the environment and sustainability, including renewables policy and energy research and development. The Renewables Advisory Board is a DBERR-sponsored body which advises government on a spectrum of renewable energy issues.
Chaired by the DBERR Energy Minister, the membership of the Renewables Advisory Board comprises Government departments, academia and renewables representatives. The board aims to develop mutual understanding of the key issues for the industry both in the short-term and over the next twenty years. These include, developing strategies for improving development and deployment of renewable technologies, strengthening the UK supply chain, and priorities for increasing competitiveness and export opportunities. The DBERR is currently conducting a review of UK energy policy, which is due to report in summer 2006.
