The natural environment of the area is outstanding with high mountain ranges sweeping down across moorland to the green-fringed coastline.

Key local industries, in addition to tourism, include crofting, forestry, fishing, aquaculture, and other developments in the food and drink sector. Increasing, renewable energy is a burgeoning part of the local economy.
In addition to wind farm developments, there are a number of other renewable energy projects underway, including using geothermal heat pumps and biomass for heat.
