Area Profiles - Skye and Wester Ross

The Skye and Wester Ross area is located on the north-west coast of Scotland and comprises the Isle of Skye, its satellite islands, and the adjacent mainland area of Lochalsh and Wester Ross. The area has a population of around 18,500.

The natural environment of the area is outstanding with high mountain ranges sweeping down across moorland to the green-fringed coastline.

Key local industries, in addition to tourism, include crofting, forestry, fishing, aquaculture, and other developments in the food and drink sector. Increasing, renewable energy is a burgeoning part of the local economy.

In addition to wind farm developments, there are a number of other renewable energy projects underway, including using geothermal heat pumps and biomass for heat.
