Shetland Renewable Energy Forum

The Shetland Renewable Energy Forum (SREF) has been set up to ensure that Shetland maximises the economic and community benefits of developing its renewable energy resources, while minimising the impact on the environmental, social and visual amenity of the islands.

SREF is committed to ensuring that Shetland benefits from the local production of renewable energy through:

  • Supporting the development of embedded generation schemes - either as community or commercial developments;
  • Supporting the development of renewable energy storage systems;
  • Advocating the principle that all commercial renewable energy developments in Shetland provide opportunities for local residents and/or communities to become stakeholders and receive some tangible return from that stakeholding; and
  • Ensuring that a mechanism exists to extract benefit for the Shetland community as a whole, from the installation of an inter-connector cable to the UK mainland grid, and from the subsequent opportunities to export renewable energy.

SREF offers encouragement, support and advice to over 40 members from a wide range of public, private and community organisations. SREF holds occasional events with invited guests chosen by members, and organises other activities to help in the pursuit of its aims.
