Hydrogen Fuel Cell Resource

The Highlands & Islands Enterprise Renewable Energy Team in association with the Local Enterprise Companies (LECs) recently completed a project investigating the opportunities for the region in relation to hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.

One of the key elements of the project was a series of workshops held in each LEC area.  The aim of the workshops was two fold, to inform local businesses and community groups about the technology, its current status and opportunities and to encourage people to put forward project ideas.

The workshops showed that the majority of projects in the Highlands & Islands were interested in creating hydrogen from a renewable energy technology, however the majority of project ideas required development.

In response to this, an information resource and project evaluation tool were created to provide practical information on several topics related to hydrogen and fuel cells, and to assist in the development of projects in the region.  The information resource and project evaluation tool are designed to be of assistance to any community or business group to help identify the key elements to consider when setting up a hydrogen and fuel cell related project and to analyse the technical and economic aspects of production of hydrogen from a renewable energy primary power source.

The following information resource documents are available for download on the right hand side:

0. Document Map

1. Introduction to hydrogen energy projects – designed to give an overview of key issues to consider when setting up a project

2. Stationary and portable fuel cells – designed to give more detailed information on types, availability and project-related considerations

3a. Hydrogen vehicles – designed to give more detailed information about current availability and key operational issues

3b. Hydrogen refuelling and storage infrastructure – designed to give more detailed information about refuelling and storing hydrogen

4. Novel hydrogen applications – designed to give information on status and prospects for raw gas production, cooking and maritime applications

The Local Enterprise Companies also have a project evaluation tool which is an interactive spreadsheet designed to undertake a techno-economic evaluation of a project, it is available through their offices.

Please contact your LEC directly if you want access to this tool.
