Guide to Small Scale Wind Energy

This guide was produced for Highlands & Islands Enterprise in 2002.  Although slightly dated, it will still cover many of the issues that need to be taken into consideration if you are thinking of installing a small scale wind turbine, either at home or at your business.

As the UK moves to meet its commitment to restrict the output of greenhouse gases by encouraging alternative energy technologies, generation of electricity from wind has become topical. Large commercial wind farms have been established and there is an increased awareness of the option to generate electricity at a much smaller scale in the community or at the domestic level.

The downloadable booklet is intended to lead anyone looking at a small scale single turbine installation through the basic stages of assessing a small scale wind energy installation, assembling a specification for the amount and use of the energy generated, and suggests how you can cost an installation and estimate the value of power generated. It will not answer every question for every installation but it will, hopefully, provide sufficient information on small scale wind turbine installations to allow a preliminary assessment of the costs and benefits of going ahead with a turbine installation project.
