How can a community take forward renewable energy projects

The Highlands and Islands Community Energy Company (HICEC) is leading the development of community energy projects across the Highlands and Islands.

HICEC is a non-profit company set up during 2005 as a subsidiary of Highlands and Islands Enterprise. It is managed by a voluntary board of directors and employ five staff and agents across the HIE network area.

Its aim is “for all communities across the Highlands and Islands to be able to generate and use renewable energy for their long term and collective benefit.” It has two main strands of activity; delivery of the community element of the Scottish Executive's Scottish Community Household Renewables Initiative, and support for communities wishing to develop small commercial scale projects.

To do this they offer advice and finance for renewable energy projects developed by community groups to benefit their community.

Check out HICEC's web site from the Key Links to find out more and learn about the projects they have supported in the past.
