The name Vestas has been synonymous with wind turbines since the very earliest days of wind power almost three decades ago.
It was therefore an inward investment coup for the Highlands and Islands when Vestas selected Argyll in 2001 as the location of a major wind turbine production centre for the UK and Irish markets. The wholly owned subsidiary, Vestas - Celtic Wind Technology Ltd., is located near Campbeltown in a £9.5 million purpose-built facility leased from Argyll and the Isles Enterprise. Vestas invested £2.8 million in production machinery.
The 10,000 m2 factory became operational in 2002, with assembly of wind turbines and production of steel towers creating over 200 much needed jobs in the Campbeltown and Kintyre area.
Kintyre was chosen due to its strategic position for servicing the UK and Irish markets, the skilled local labour force and the facility leasing arrangement brokered with the Local Enterprise Company. Market regime changes in the UK at that time also further strengthened the inward investment as did a commitment by Scottish Power Plc to further expand their already large portfolio of wind farms in the Kintyre area and elsewhere in Scotland.
The services Vestas - Celtic Wind Technology Ltd. offer include:
Among their key projects have been the 30 wind turbine contract for the first major UK offshore wind farm, the 60MW North Hoyle Offshore Wind Farm, 7km off Rhyll on the north coast of Wales. Another landmark contract was Powergen’s Scroby Sands offshore wind farm, a project that was worth 100 million Euros to the Kintyre-based company.
