Renewable Energy Company Profile – Bryan J. Rendall Electrical

The renewable energy CV of Orkney-based BJRE Ltd is an impressive one by any standards, with green power projects spanning the globe from California to Australia.

Crucial to the company's strong performance has been an end-to-end approach embracing design, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of grid installations ranging from single wind power turbines to large substations handling up to 220kV.

Its most recent success story is a new high performance wind turbine which is bringing power to some of the UK's most remote communities.

The 6kW Scirocco has been developed in partnership with Eoltec of France. Designed initially for remote and extreme wind locations, the turbine is also proving highly effective at lower wind speed sites and its performacne is winning praise from across the industry.

Sam Harcus, Highlands and Islands Community Energy Company Officer, says: "The Scirocco produces more energy than any other trubine we have on the islands and has been much more reliable."

One of the first sites in the UK to install the Scirocco was Westray Processors. Over the past year the turbine has produced 25,595kWh, a figure well in excess of early predictions.

Geordie Thomson, factory manager at Westray Processors, says: "We've been very impressed by the amount of electricity it's generated - the ouptut has exceeded our expectiations.

"This was a great way for us to evaluate the potential of using renewables to cut our energy costs."

Demand for Scirocco is winning BJRE orders from across the UK, including North Yorkshire Council, a remote off-grid installation in Wales and the farming community.

Closer to home, Britain's tallest land-based lighthouse at North Ronaldsay had its own Scirocco turbine installed in November 2007.

Bryan Rendall himself is clearly upbeat with the turbine's progress. "We set out with Eoltec to create a robust, high performance turbine and we're delighted with its phenomenal energy generation," he said.

Other Orkney-based projects in which the company has been involved include the NEG-Micon's (now Vestas) test turbines at the Burgar Hill Wind Energy Test Site. This featured what was at the time the UK’s largest turbine, rated at 2.75 MW with a rotor diameter of 92m. Beyond Orkney, BJRE has been involved in the construction of the UK’s largest onshore windfarm at Cefn Croes in 2004/2005 in Wales. The company has also completed recent projects in Spain, the USA and Eire.

BJRE's comprehensive range of services for the wind energy sector includes:

  • Site appraisal and feasibility studies
  • Soil resistivity surveys
  • Grid connection
  • Electrical infrastructure design and construction, including substation
  • Wind turbine construction, commissioning operations and maintenance.
  • Supply of small scale wind turbines up to 250 kW, including the Proven, Eoltec and WES ranges
  • Full Clear Skies / SCHRI accreditation
  • Turbine, electrical infrastructure and substation troubleshooting and fault-finding
