| Warm support for Glenelg's Chillwind | |
| 28 March 2006 The wind of change is blowing in Glenelg bringing the West Coast village an economic boost. Chillwind Ltd, a Glenelg-based company serving the renewable energy sector, has gained approval for a grant to expand its operations and take on an additional member of staff. The company was set up by Neil Hammond in 1991 to provide equipment, services and design work for renewable energy projects. Operating from his Glenelg base, Neil and his eight-strong workforce install wind monitoring equipment, service solar photovoltaic projects and provide data logging equipment for test sites. Identifying a specific demand, Neil, with assistance from Skye and Lochalsh Enterprise (SALE) has developed an innovative mobile wind profiling unit which he intends to promote within the industry. He also plans to explore the potential of installing solar photovoltaic facilities in domestic homes and the feasibility of establishing a local bio-diesel production plant, using commercial waste cooking oil as a substitute for diesel fuel. To help Chillwind Ltd press ahead with these plans, SALE has agreed to contribute to the cost of a brand new office and workshop which will enable the company to develop its business in Glenelg, rather than consider other locations. Neil commented: "Chillwind Ltd is a market leader in its field and we're delighted that our expansion plans are to be developed here in Glenelg. The new buildings will be ecologically designed using locally sourced timber and environmentally benign materials. "We have built up a depth of knowledge in renewable technologies and we're confident that we'll have a significant role to play in their development throughout the Highlands." David Pringle, SALE development officer said: "As the wind energy market has matured into a major industry, Chillwind Ltd has remained at its forefront. The pioneering small wind companies which have become very large operators are still using Chillwind Ltd as their preferred supplier for wind monitoring services, recognising the hard work and innovation of its staff. "SALE is pleased to assist this firm to continue to expand in Glenelg where their presence remains a valuable asset to the local economy." Visit the Chillwind's website at www.chillwind.co.uk | |
