A specialised offshore construction vessel has taken up position off the Orkney island of Eday to begin the process of installing the UK's first grid-connected tidal turbine.

The Beatrice oil field 12 miles off the Caithness coast is now home to one of two giant 5MW wind turbines. At 5pm on 20th August the first turbine left Nigg Fabrication Yard - where it was assembled - and was sailed out through the Cromarty Souters onwards into position atop a 70m subsea jacket in approximately 45m of water.

EMEC's first tidal device is on its way

The world's only grid-connected tidal energy testing site will take a significant step forward later this week with the arrival in Orkney of a specialised offshore construction vessel. The jack-up barge will be used to install the first tidal energy device to be tested at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).

Windfarms heading for the right sites - so far

Most windfarm developers are avoiding sites which will have a significant impact on Scotland's landscapes and wildlife, according to a new report by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH). The study shows that SNH had no objection in principle to most (about 75%) applications over the past five years.

One hundred thousand reasons to support renewable energy

The United Kingdom's first ever community-owned, and grid connected, wind farm has announced that it has made a £100,000 net profit in its first full year of operation. The small wind farm on the community owned Island of Gigha, in Argyll, comprises three Vestas V27 wind turbines, each with an installed capacity of 225 kilowatts.

Deputy First Minister has a wet and windy open day (but it's got nothing to do with the weather!)

Deputy First Minister Nicol Stephen MSP officially opened not one but two renewable energy schemes today - npower renewables Garrogie Hydro Scheme and its flagship Farr Wind Farm, both south of Inverness.
